I happened to be tuned in to CBC radio’s noon talk show last week when the topic of conversation (on the heels of the Manchester bombing) was ‘How are you handling the terrorist activity, the political tension, the ecological devastation et al, emotionally?”

Had I not been driving I would have done something I’ve never done – I’d have phoned in.

I chose not to listen to the litany of crises that followed, switching instead to some soothing music-to-drive-by. Does that sound cold and callous? If so, let me explain.

Everything we send out there into the ethos has energy; we decide what that energy will be. Sometimes we decide consciously but mostly it’s unconscious. The venting, complaining, the anger and frustration and fear all come with their own dark energy, and that chemical soup has its accompanying cloud of doom which envelops us. Darkness breeds more darkness, more fear, more pain, etc. It’s like ‘she tells someone, and he tells someone, and . . . and . . .” until the entire planet is wrapped in gloom.

Does that make sense? And now do you understand why I chose not to listen to the conversations? I might have been surprised; it’s possible that some of those callers felt as I do that it’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. I will never know. But if I had been able to call in, that’s what I’d have said.

The thing is, when we react darkly to heinous acts, which admittedly it seems natural to do, then the perpetrators have won doubly. It’s exactly what they had in mind, and we play into it perfectly with our unconscious reaction. Instead, take a deep breath. Take another. Let the heart slow down and open. Now send out compassion, and here’s the trick, not just to the victims, but also to the aggressors. Peace, love and compassion. A simple prayer. Then dust off your hands and know ‘my work is done’. And forget it. Don’t go back to it and dwell in it.

Okay, you say, but what about the fear? How do I not feel fear?

You may be surprised, after sincerely performing the little blessing above, at how the fear diminishes. You have taken action, and although you cannot see instant results, it feels better in your own heart and soul. Remember what FEAR stands for: False Evidence Appearing Real.

I believe that the activity on the planet today, scary as it may be, is all the darkness, formerly hidden, that is now surfacing. Earth’s vibrations are rising and those lower dimensions cannot stand the amount of light that is penetrating, so must surface to be healed. We can be the healers. We must be the healers! We must step up to the plate because that is what is being asked of us now. No hiding or whining or whimpering.

The importance of the energy we send out cannot be exaggerated, keeping in mind that we create more of whatever it is that we focus on. That is a law of the Universe, like gravity. Ergo, the more peace and love and smiles we send out, the more we get back, (the boomerang principle) and the more there is in the world at large. Let’s reverse the effects of terrorism and fear by the only means that can ever be truly successful: increasing the amount of compassion and love!

I will close with a Blessing Prayer for the Earth from the wonderful Barbara de Angelis, who invites us to include it as a family ritual before a meal or at bedtime. She tells us:
Each time you offer this Blessing Prayer, you will be a healer. You will be an uplifter. You will be a blessing. No matter what else you do that day, you will be living your purpose.

I offer my blessings to the planet Earth, my home while I am in this body.
May Grace now shower upon the world and restore it to Peace.
May all who suffer now be comforted and healed.
May all who are oppressed now be liberated and their dignity redeemed.
May all who are lost in forgetfulness now awaken from the Great Sleep and return to Remembrance.
May all beings now live together in perfect harmony. May all souls now align with their Highest.
May all souls now find their way back to Love and may that Love be All that Is.
May the One Perfect Light now triumph over all darkness in all people and all places, seen and unseen,
And May that One Perfect Light prevail for all time.
May there be Peace.
May there be Peace.
May there be Peace
